Energy Audit Homework

Where is Energy Audit--
Wednesday, December 15, 2010
8:47 AM
Goal: Begin to look at things from an energy transfer perspective. Answer the following questions at home this evening.  Due Thursday December 16th.

1.           At home this evening determine the type of energy used for
a.                 Heating the home
                                     i.                               What type of energy comes into the home
ii.                               What type of energy is in the room to keep you warm
iii.                               How does energy transfer take place between these two things?
b.                 Electric Energy
                                     i.                               What things in the home use electric energy.
ii.                               What type of energy do you think it was before electric energy? How do you know?
iii.                               What happens to all that electric energy in the home?
c.                  Why doesn't the home get warmer and warmer and warmer?
                                     i.                               Why does the heater in the home keep having to go on to keep the home warm?
ii.                               How could you change your home to make it the same temperature and that you wouldn't have to keep warming the home as much?
iii.                               If you turn off the heat in the home it gets colder over time. Where does all this energy go? Is it lost?

Energy

Last week we started a unit on energy. The students learned about different forms of energy and that one way to describe energy is to call it a "substance like quality that has the ability to do things like warm something up, make it move, etc." We also learned that energy cannot be destroyed, instead it gets transferred from one form to another. We use a pie shape diagram to describe energy transfer so that the pie for a given system does not change in size, instead the pieces of pie change relative sizes as the action takes place. This week we will go into more depth around this concept by conducting an energy theater and having students practice using their math skills in using equations for stored gravitational energy, kinetic energy, and stored elastic energy.

CESA #2 Homework Assignment Due Friday Dec. 3rd

This school quarter is going to be shorter than the first quarter of school for 9th graders because we extended first quarter one week to provide for a better introduction to high school and now that we have had snow days, we have just too few days. Thus, I have decided to have students do their current events as homework instead of in class. Doing these in class provides me an opportunity to help students make sense of the science that is described in the article and we can do that on the day the CESA is due instead.

Students will receive a CESA article each week and complete a writeup of the article using the CESA guidelines provided in their logbook by the due date.

Here is the article about Mako Shark Skin

Here is the article about deer in the headlights.

Here is the article about elephant and mammal evolution after dinosaur extinction.

Here is the article about images illuminating the brain.

More Periodic Table Work

Below is a Periodic table showing the first 18 elements (3 periods) and electrons in those shells. Note the Group (column) and Period (row) similarities.

CESAs (Current Events in Science)

Each week we do current events in science. The learning goal for CESAs is that
  1. Students read and understand current science literature.
  2. Students read about scientists doing very ineresting  and compelling work as some of the concepts studied in 9th grade science class are more basic.
  3. Students learn about and become proficient at identifying variables and controls used in scientific studies.
  4. Students demonstrate understanding by writing up their CESA in a format that uses 5 habits of mind.
CESAs are an example of how differentiation happens in this science classroom. Most weeks, I bring several different readings that students can choose from in a wide range of reading levels. Students are asked to choose options that are difficult but not impossible for them. Most weeks there are honors options for students wishing to obtain honors credit in this class.

Pretest

The unit we are beginning leads to a deep understanding of the causes for weather on Earth. In order to evaluate student learning during this unit, all students will complete the following pretest to see what they already know about the following subject.

Why is Seattle warmer in summer than in winter?

Note: This question--while seemly simple--is complex and multifaceted.

Welcome to 2nd Quarter Science

I will use this blog to keep you up to date with what is happening in 9th grade science this quarter. Each day you can follow along with what is going on by looking at the calendar to the left and seeing assignments.

Our overarching goal for this first week is to develop our ability to collaborate and practice innovation, and creativity as we conduct science and engineering activities.
